Baku Marathon 2018 - Win the wind!04 Jun 2018
On May 13, Baku Marathon–2018 took place following the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative. Vice-president of the Foundation Leyla Aliyeva and Arzu Aliyeva too participated in the marathon. Starting from the State Flag Square, the marathon covered a 21km long route, ending at the Baku Olympic Stadium. Held under the slogan “Win the Wind”, the Baku marathon is arranged for the third time, in a consecutive order. Some 18,000 people were registered for this year’s marathon. Held for the third time, the “Baku Marathon-2018” has been organized with support from the Seaside Boulevard Department and the Baku Olympic Stadium, and implemented by “Sport Marketing Group” (SMG).
Joining the marathon, over 18 000 participants gave support to the ideas of solidarity and healthy lifestyle. Marathon, along with providing support to the development of sport, plays a significant role in terms of popularizing healthy lifestyle, bringing people together around benevolent purposes, and creating positive energy.
This time’s marathon was joined by over 300 foreigners from various countries and about 100 representatives from different regions of Azerbaijan, and students were distinguished for their activity.
Held for the third time, the “Baku Marathon-2018” has been organized with support from the Seaside Boulevard Department and the Baku Olympic Stadium, and implemented by “Sport Marketing Group” (SMG). The “Baku Marathon-2018” united a number of organizations around itself. Over 60 organizations and companies operating in the republic joined the marathon.
Citizens from regions of Azerbaijan - Ganja, Sumgait, Mingachevir, Guba, Gusar, Lankaran, Astara, Nakhchivan, Gabala, Shamakhy, Zagatala, Sheki, Oghuz and other districts participated in the Baku marathon. Along with Azerbaijani citizens, representatives of such countries as Italy, France, Russia, Turkey, Iran, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Great Britain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iraq, USA, China, Malaysia, India, Japan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Colombia, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Czech Republic etc. joined the competition.
Representatives of the embassies of Italy, Russia, Turkey, China, Malaysia, India, Japan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Colombia, UAE and Latvia in Azerbaijan too participated in the marathon.
Winners of the “Baku Marathon-2017” were established on two categories – men and women. In each of the categories, winners of the 1st place were awarded a money prize amounting to 3 thousand Manats, while the winners of the 2nd and 3rd places received 2000 and 1000 Manats, respectively, along with other presents, as well as medals and certificates.
Igor Olefirenko, a citizen of Ukraine, took the 1st place among men, with Mahammad Jafar Muradi from Iran being the 2nd, while Turkish citizen Omar Alkanoghlu arrived 3rd. Among women, Chelik Fadima from Turkey reached the finish line 1st, while Valentina Poltavska from Ukraine was the 2nd, with Anastasia Petrova being the 3rd on the finish line.
The rewarding ceremony took place at the Baku Olympic Stadium. The winners of both the categories – men and women – were rewarded with money awards in the amount of 3 thousand, 2 thousand and 1 thousand for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places accordingly, and medals.
The funds collected from the Baku Marathon-2018 will be directed to the project of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation associated with children deprived of parental protection.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games was a multinational, multi-sport event that was held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 12 to 22 May 2017. Baku 2017 is aimed at strengthening ties between the 57 members of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation, “the collective voice of the Muslim world.” The Games feature over 5,000 athletes from 50 participating countries competing in 20 sports.
